The information below is intended to help skaters understand the test, the class, and whether it may be a good fit for them. With questions about your specific situation, please contact Grace, or ask your private coach if you have one!
What is the Pre-Preliminary Skating Skills Test?
It is the first test in the US Figure Skating testing structure. In the Basic Skills and Freeskate levels, coaches "test" the skaters on their skills and determine whether they are ready to move to the next level. In a Skating Skills test, US Figure Skating Officials (judges) watch skaters perform their test and give them a result of Retry, Pass, Pass with Honors, or Pass with Distinction. If the skater passes the test, they move on to working on the next test! The test itself is a series of "patterns" with specific steps that you need to complete in a specific order and in a specific place on the ice - Similar to a program in some ways, but with no music. Skating Skills tests focus on basic skating and do not include any jumps or spins; The patterns include skills like stroking, crossovers, edges, turns, and spirals. More information about the test from US Figure Skating.
Is this class a good fit for me?
Scenario 1: I'm in Pre-Freeskate or higher in Learn to Skate and don't yet have a private coach. I'm interested in starting to learn and work on this test. This is a perfect way to learn how testing works and learn the test itself. If this is your first introduction to the test, it's fairly likely that you won't be ready to take your test yet in September, and that's okay! If you pick it up quickly and may be ready to test in time, the coach can talk with you about this and give you approval to test. You would need to work with a private coach on the day of the test session, and we can help arrange that for you.
Scenario 2: I've been working on this test with my private coach, with the goal to test at our local test session in September. If you have a private coach, this class serves as great supplemental instruction and practice time for your test! Your private coach will determine whether you are ready to test and will put you on the ice at the test session. In class, you'll get more repetition, tips on how to improve, and dedicated time to work on your test alongside other skaters working toward the same goal!
