FAQs

What is testing?

Testing is one of the most important and rewarding parts of figure skating. Test sessions are organized and run under procedures outlined in the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook, including the types of tests offered, the elements on each test, how tests are marked, which judges are required, age requirements for different test categories and conduct of coaches and candidates at test sessions. Test sessions can only be held under the auspices and control of a member club, like GEFSC. Testers must have the required membership in USFS. The coaches at GEFSC look forward to guiding you and your skater on their testing journey.

What is in-person vs. virtual testing?

In addition to organizing in-person testing, a member club may offer virtual testing for most disciplines. There are specific guidelines and protocols for virtual testing. A skater may not independently organize a virtual test and submit it to a judge or to U.S. Figure Skating. Your coach will explain the process of virtual testing.

There are both benefits and drawbacks to in-person testing and virtual testing. In-person testing will be on specific limited dates and allows for a single run through only; however, skaters grow from the performance experience and results are immediate. Virtual testing can be offered more frequently and is often less stressful; however, a video sometimes is not as reliable a reflection of a performance and skaters must wait for results.

How to test using competition protocol?

Skaters at certain levels may receive credit for tests by achieving minimum scores at a competition held under the international judge system (IJS). GEFSC skaters who wish to test in this way are required to submit the necessary forms to the test chair, following specific procedures for submission and payment. Please contact the test chair in advance to be sure that your skater is familiar with the requirements for testing with competition protocol.
