About

This 8-week Learn to Skate session will be March 14 - May 2, 2026. Classes are on Saturdays from 11-11:45 AM, and include 30 minutes of instructional class time and 15 minutes of practice time. Please review the Classes section below for more information on which class to sign up for and the start and end time for that class. We will only be offering beginning Learn to Skate classes on Saturdays (Snowplow & Basic 1-2). More information and registrations for Tuesday Learn to Skate classes and Saturday Aspire classes can be found here.

A Learn to Skate Membership for the current 2025-2026 membership year is required to participate in Learn to Skate classes, and also makes skaters eligible to participate in other GEFSC Learn to Skate opportunities like Booster Lessons, Future Stars, and the Christmas Show. If you do not yet have a membership for this year, please purchase this in addition to your class registration.

If you have any questions, please contact our Learn to Skate Director, Grace Myer, at learntoskate@gefsc.com.

Classes:

11:00-11:45 AM Classes: The classes below will have class instruction from 11-11:30 AM and practice time from 11:30-11:45 AM.

Snowplow 1-4 (Ages 3-5): It's all about fun!  Get your skater on the ice by introducing them to the basics.  Our snowplow levels (1-4) get them moving by allowing them to feel comfortable on the ice. Skaters in this age range who are new to GEFSC Learn to Skate classes should sign up for the Snowplow 1 class.

Basic 1-2 (Age 6+): Our basic skills classes get your skater comfortable with moving across the ice!  Upon completing all 6 Basic Skills levels, your skater will master skills necessary to succeed in hockey or figure skating! Skaters in this age range who are new to GEFSC Learn to Skate classes should sign up for the Basic 1 class.

Booster Lessons:

***Open for registration after the first week of class***

These supplemental lessons provide one-on-one instruction to refine skills in your level for Snowplow Sam, Basic Skills, Pre-Freeskate, and Hockey Skills skaters. Booster Lessons are a 15-minute lesson during the practice time from 11:30-11:45 AM. Skaters will register for a specific date slot for their lesson. Booster lessons may be rescheduled with 48 hours advance notice if a different lesson slot is available. Booster lessons are for skaters who do not yet have a private lesson coach outside of Learn to Skate lessons.

Important Notes:

  • Parent/chaperones may view class from the bleachers only.  Parents will not be permitted to sit in the players boxes.

  • GEFSC Learn to Skate is required to uphold all facility regulations.

  • Learn to Skate will be cancelled if EVSC school is cancelled. For Saturday classes, we will decide based on weather advisories, potential building closures, and with consideration for the safety of staff and skaters. Due to sessions planned for the full year, there will be no make up dates or refunds.

  • Cancellation/Refund Policy: Since your registration fills one of a limited number of spots that then cannot be filled by another skater, we are unable to offer any refunds once the session begins.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Rental skates are available and included in your class fees! We recommend that all skaters start out in standard ice skates. If you plan to play hockey in the future, your class instructor can help you know when your skater is ready to transition to hockey skates.

  • Helmets are strongly recommended, though not mandatory, for beginning skaters of all ages.

  • Skaters should dress in layers that will keep them warm, but still allow them to move around freely! We recommend wearing gloves.

  • The 15-minute practice time is combined for all levels of skaters. Skaters can choose to either practice their skills or play a large group game each week. Booster lessons are also held during this time in a coned off area on the far side of the ice.
